 Homemade BBQ Sauce

As a health conscious small family. We are very aware of the hidden nasties in store bought ultra-processed bottled BBQ sauces. I make it my job to keep us eating as simple and clean as physically possible. So homemade is best option in our house for sauces too. 

Ingredients

  • 1 tin of tomatoes (sieved and skinned)
  • 1/2 diced white onion (add if you like a chunky sauce)
  • 1/3 apple cider vinagar
  • 1/8 cup molasses
  • 1/3 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp onion powder
  • 1/8 tsp garlic powder
  • pinch of chili powder
  • pinch of allspice powder
  • 4 tsp paprika powder
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tbsp butter


Instructions

  1. Combine wet ingredients, in a heavy bottom pan. Add diced onion so it has time to soften
  2. Heat on medium heat and Stir in brown sugar, stir until the brown sugar is well combined into the sauce
  3. Add Spices, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, allspice, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper and salt
  4. Simmer and Reduce, bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and let the sauce to reduce for about 20 minutes, or enough until sauce becomes thick. Do not cover it with a lid
  5. Once thickened add the butter and mix until combined
  6. Cool and Store, pour the sauce into a glass bottle with a lid. Let is chill in the fridge before serving for best results
